Aufheben

Overview

Aufheben ([ˈʔaʊ̯fˌheːbm̩, -bən] ) or Aufhebung ([ˈaʊ̯fˌheːbʊŋ] ) is a German word with several seemingly contradictory meanings, including "to lift up", "to abolish", "cancel" or "suspend", or "to sublate". The term has also been defined as "abolish", "preserve", and "transcend". In philosophy, aufheben is used by Hegel in his exposition of dialectics, and in this sense is translated mainly as "sublate".

  1. To combat the shallowness, to strive with German earnestness and honesty, to draw Philosophy out of the solitude into which it has wandered—to do such work as this we may hope that we are called by the higher spirit of our time. Let us together greet the dawn of a better time in which the spirit, hitherto a prey to externalities, may return within itself, come to itself again, and win space and room for a kingdom of…

It was asserted that, as the word _Vernunft_ (Reason) comes from _vernehmen_ (to comprehend), therefore _Vernunft_ means a capacity to =comprehend= the so-called "Supersensuous," _i.e._, _Νεϕελοκοκκυγία_,[15] or Cloud-cuckoo-town. This pretty notion met with boundless, approval, and for…

  3. This hypostatising of faculties, and this distinction of the “Substantial” soul from its “accidentia” or phenomena, had grown—through the materialistic proclivities of popular conception—from the indications found in Aristotle. It attained its climax, perhaps in the Wolffian school in Germany, but it has been the resort of superficial psychology in all ages. For while it, on one hand, seemed to save the substantial…
