Elis (Ancient Greek: Ἦλις, Doric Greek: Ἆλις, in the local dialect: Ϝᾶλις, Modern Greek: Ήλιδα, romanized: Elida) was the capital city of the ancient polis (city-state) of Elis, and at the time of Pausanias (2nd c. AD) one of the most populous and splendid cities of the ancient Greek world.

Its main importance was as the organiser of the ancient Olympic Games for more than 1000 years.

Many monumental buildings of the city have been excavated and can be seen today.
